August – Visitor Round-up

Another month closes… and now we are entering Autumn! YAY!  ahem… excuse us… sorry… it’s our favourite time of year.

Anyway, it’s time to highlight all the visitors from August who not only just dropped by to say ‘hi’,  but left valuable information which furthers our community.

All efforts are made to keep archived posts accurate with new information, but in case something gets overlooked, it’s highlighted below.

We’ve said once, and we will shout it again: This site wouldn’t be nearly as accurate if it weren’t the wonderful information you all post, so please, keep commenting!  It helps everyone!

Research help from you lovely visitors!

Hello to all of you.  We will take time today thank you guys, the visitors for all your wonderful comments, suggestions and input.  Thank you greatly… all of you have contributed something to this site.  What started as a simple project to keep a record of personal research into costume recreation has now grown into one of the top non-commercial sites in Google for searches on Wanda’s costume from Age of Ultron.  I certainly never expected that, :), nor even had that as a goal, but don’t we all feel lucky! All of you are to thank!

THANK YOU!!!!

Additionally, I highly encourage everyone to continue providing observations and feedback.  Many of the discoveries made here are owed to your comments.

In fact, in honour of the helpfulness of you the visitors, I’d like to highlight the contributors who have faithfully been visiting, even during my recent life-enduing hiatus.

Scarlet Witch Avengers 2 – Dress Construction

So back to Scarlet Witch’s black dress from Avengers 2.  In the previous post, the screen captures help outline the observable details, so let’s put all the notes together into a sketch to help better illustrate the dress’s basic construction. In addition, there are some thoughts at the bottom of the post on some patterns to help the construction process along.

I should preface all this with the statement that I am by no means a very good artist.

Scarlet Witch Avengers 2 – Dress Details

I had started a series of entries to examine Scarlet Witch’s costume for the new Avengers 2 movie Age of Ultron, based on observations from leaked set photos.  In the previous entry, all her accessories, boots, braces and other small items are examined.  In this post, we’ll jump into the black dress she’s wearing.

Above we have the best photos with the most resolution released of the filming so far.  It gives a basic idea of the dress she’s wearing, and by examining a few details from other photos, we can get an idea as to its construction.

Scarlet Witch Avengers 2 – Source Images

It occurred to me as i was looking over the last post, that I did not include the many images i’ve collected to do this research.

Important Note: These images are not mine. They are sources from many different location across the net, and I don’t claim any as mine.

Scarlet Witch Avengers 2 – Costume Study

UPDATE: As more details become available, we try to maintain the conclusions as accurately as possible. To that end, a new page has been created, which logs all the current research.  Please find it here.

Oh, Wanda, Wanda, Wanda.  You’ve been my favourite mutant for so long.  Well, you and Kitty Pryde, but that’s not what this post is about.  So long have i wanted to dress up like you, but… and i’m ashamed to admit it… i’ve never really liked your costume.  Red and pink… uhhhh.  I was not blessed with a body that could effectively pull off her Ultimate Universe costume.  Xmen Evolution was cool, but as I am not a 15 year old girl, it didn’t quite have the draw to motivate me enough to make it.

There is her House of M gown which is gorgeous, but that’s a cosplay for another post… *wink*

LOVE LOVE LOVE her new Uncanny Avengers dress, and the second I saw it, I filed it away in my brain on my cosplay wish-list.

Scarlet Witch Avengers 2But then… magic happened.  Magic in the form of leaked set photos from the filming of Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. The film which Joss Whedon in his brilliance decided to include Scarlet Witch and finally let our gorgeous awesome mutant/avenger take form in the real world.  I saw her costume, and it clicked.  “AWESOME!  I could actually wear that to work!!”

(I should note that as a geeky computer programmer who buries her head in her laptop and is continually thought of as ‘nice’ but ‘weird’, i can actually get away with wearing just about anything to work… and I have.  Fairy gown and Mother Gothel top the list of many strange things I’ve worn into the office.)

So, let’s dive in.  I’ve spent quite a bit of time collecting as many photos as can be found and studying them for any minor detail which can be ascertained. The following is my own brain dump of observation as this cosplay starts to take shape.

Tauriel Costume Study I

Taurial - Film PosterSince the first images were revealed for The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, so many of us have been fascinated by Tauriel’s costume. Hours spent pouring over as many production and still frame photos to be found before opening day. As more evidence from photos and the film were made available, conclusions could be made about construction (based only on my own costuming and construction experience).  Since fixation on understanding seemingly innocuous detail is one of my weaknesses, my observations can be a bit weird, or even pointless.

However, on the chance that there are other like minded individuals, or perhaps there is value to the details studied, posting my findings/notes seemed like an interesting idea, just in case.  You are also all highly encouraged to view the many gorgeous, eye-candy worthy cosplay and recreations there are popping up in our geeky community.  These woman are seriously talented.

Note 1: Personal passions are more with sewing/tailoring in cloth, therefore, initial observations are concentrated on foundation items (gowns, shirts, bodices, etc.) and not so much on the leather/armour/weapon related details (boots, braces, props…)

Note 2: Now that the BluRay has been released, the plan is to get more appropriate screen captures to post.
